Culture and Language

When we talk about culture we are mostly talking about: authentic materials, food, parties, native people, tradition and art.
We want to make the learning as enjoyable as possible so let´s focus on the parties, you can pick between lots of them: Halloween, San Patrick, Thanksgiving, April fools, Valentine´s Day,...
You can find information in the links below:
-Halloween > Halloween activities I > Halloween activities II
-San Patrick  > San Patrick activities
-Thanksgiving > Thanksgiving activities
-April Fools > April Fools activities
-Valentine´s Day  > Valentine´s webquest

You can suggest the students pick one of these holidays and have a theme party (get dressed up and invite some friends, do typical food, play original music...) take pictures, make a video and use Glogster to make a mural and tell us your experience.

To sum up, here I leave you a fun activity about English culture:

Hope you and your students enjoy, don´t forget to share and leave a comment with your experience!!

  1. Cristina, I love that you have created this activity to celebrate the different cultural aspects that we celebrate during these specific holidays. I'm from the United States and honestly these holidays were such a big part of my school life growing up. All throughout primary, our teachers always incorporated moments to enjoy each holiday through stories, movies, crafts or projects.

Especially while learning a foreign language, taking a moment to learn about the culture really helps motivate the students and helps them form an emotional and meaningful connection to what they are learning.

Also, I love your idea about celebrating and then making a video or mural to document the experience using ICT!

  2. Hi Cristina!

I like the way you have organized the blog. This is very important because we can do different activities taking into account the motivation for our students. About that activity is a great idea. Congratulations!!! Thanks to this task they will know English culture, and as we have studied it is very important to learn a foreign language, also they will enjoy dress up and testing typical food and we they interact with the rest of the students.

    Regards.

  3. Hello Cristina!

Talking about culture is a very correct option to approach students to the English culture and help them to know and understand it. Celebrating parties such as Halloween, San Patrick's day or Valentine's day it's a really good option because they learn things, vocabulary and of course, they learn new things.
I find the links very interesting and really good to complement the work about English culture.

Doing theme parties about different important days in England will bring them a significant learning.

I like the activity you propose to sum up. Students will like it because they will see it really visual with the pictures and this type of activities are interesting to them.

  4. Cristina, you have a really lovely blog. The layout, the colours and the images in your posts are so nice.

You also provide a great deal of links and useful tools in most of your posts. Great job.

Finally I agree with you that give to the students some notions about the culture of some countries such as UK or USA helps to understand the language. I have always said that learning a language is learning a culture, and both should go together as the culture provides the background of the language.

    Congratulations for your blog.

    Best wishes

  5. Hello Cristina,

I really like your blog. It is well structured and organised.

I specially like this part of the blog about culture and language because I think that it is a good way to increase the curiosity of students. I think that being aware of the different traditions and the typical ways of celebrating events is meaningful knowledge for students and it will allow them to be more integrated in that society if some day they have to visit places with that traditions.

In addition I like the fact that you mention a wide range of traditions, and you show different kind of activities too.

    Regards,

    Ana
